Northfield and Norwich University

Northfield is home to Norwich University (the oldest private military college in the United States). Norwich attracts students, staff, and faculty from around the country and around the world, which gives this small town more diversity and a more cosmopolitan feel than you might expect.

Norwich also provides fantastic opportunities for entertainment and recreation. The mens’ and womens’ hockey teams are perennial national powerhouses, having won league and national championships. And Northfield comes out in force to support the Cadets. Want to see all your friends in one place? Head to Kreitzberg Arena on a Friday in January or February!

It's also fun to be able to watch sports that you wouldn’t normally see on television. Bring your crew to watch rugby, tennis, soccer, and even the drill team.

The Paine Mountain Recreation Center is renowned for its top notch mountain bike trails. The trails are used by hikers, runners, even the high school cross country and track teams. And yes, if you’ve got that adventurous spirit, you can even hike up in the winter with a sled, and sled down the trail. Yes, you heard that right.

When you’re in Northfield, make sure to stop in at The Cornerstone, right on the Common. There’s a great selection of fantastic local beers, wonderful food (I recommend the Thai burger), and fun service.

For a quick bite, don’t miss the Depot Square Pizzeria. Andy whips up delicious calzones, whole pizzas, and slices. You’re sure to run into people you know, which makes lunch just a little more enjoyable.

Northfield Schools have elementary from Pre-K to 5th grade. Then the kids go all the way across the street to the Middle / High School. Northfield is proud to have had recent Vermont Teacher of the Year.

Small class sizes and caring teachers make for a great educational experience. And the proximity and connections to Norwich University make it easy for students to enroll in university courses while still in high school, earning credits at both levels. That’s the kind of double dipping everyone loves!

Northfield is only 10 minutes from Montpelier and Barre, 20 minutes from Randolph. And, if skiing is your thing, jump on Cox Brook Road and head over the mountain to Moretown, Waitsfield, and Warren (Sugarbush and Mad River Glen ski areas).

The Amos Robinson House ca 1785 is the oldest recorded residence in Northfield. Amos was the first settler of Northfield and choose a most advantageous site for his farmstead. Excellent southern exposure, abundant water from a natural spring, well drained soils, productive woodlands. Over the years, the farmstead proved to be most productive with it's fertile fields providing prosperity to the Robinson family. As the family grew a full cape style house was added to the original residence. Through careful stewardship over the years a great deal of original fabric was retained, including wide pine wainscoting, wide pine flooring, original fireplace with bake oven, window and door trim. All of which give the farmhouse a great sense of antiquity while supporting the best state of the art systems. There are 4 bedrooms including a first floor master suite, a country kitchen with adjacent dining room. A large living room is in addition to the family room. The second floor bedrooms are spacious with great antique detailing. The present owners have built an impressive post and beam bank barn that has three turnout stalls and hay store on the upper level accessed by a high drive. The well managed fields include hay fields, fenced pasture and a riding ring. The woodlands have also been well managed providing much of the timbers for the barn. Ideally located with easy access to Northfield Village and Interstate 89.

This amazing home was built in 1972 by the current owner, a well known and well liked and skilled local builder. After 47 years they are ready to downsize. This house affords three bedrooms and two bathrooms along with a home office on the second floor. On the first floor you will find ample room in the kitchen, a nice dining room and living room. The home features a custom field stone fireplace. This home has that custom creativity that will be hard to find else where. While the house itself is awesome, the 2500 sqft Barn is a serious contender to be the feature of this property. The ground level has plenty of room for horse/cow/donkey stalls, coops, parking spaces or whatever you want. The second floor has a really cool high drive, and loads of open space for just about anything you could want. There is even a smaller portion with a third floor, perfect for storage. All of this combine with the 51.70 +/- Acres of pasture and wooded land, make it a home-run. OH Yeah don't forget that it is a country setting and only 1.5 miles to I-89 on a paved road.
